George I haven't used Windows since Win98 so definitely not a Windows expert in any way. I can only suggest if you have an original Windows OS on a disk then use it to boot and see if you can access any built in utility. At the worst it might mean a format. Have you got a backup saved on another drive? If so can you boot from it?
On a Mac if I hold down the Alt key during boot I can select another drive to boot from.
Sorry can't think of anything else that might help. Where are the WinGurus when you need them :)
