A couple of points about this design......certainly, a steady rest should itself be steady......and that is definitely the case with this rest......there is no flexing, vibrating, or movement. Two factors that help make this so: 1st) laminating three pieces of 3/4" ply gives the rest some weight, heft, and stability.....2nd) the long length and depth of the dados for the wheel arms lends real support to those arms and limits movement and flexing.

Everyone should realize that no single design will work for every turner in every wood turning situation......make your design fit your lathe and the items you make.
