Don.....my old Delta compares very unfavorably with a modern lathe......however, that bed gap allows for tool rests, etc. to come onto and off the lathe at both the gap and the end of the bed.....the steady rest that has an open side has a real advantage but I had a time thinking of a way to get one made using wood....in metal maybe.....but, I'm no metal worker.

To use this rest will require some planning and forethought.....nothing like making something on a lathe only to realize I'm going to have to take things apart in order to position a piece of equipment that I need to finish.....things don't remount the same.
