Pretty much every thing has been covered. I will add a quote from an old Hollywood movie about Cyrano de Bergerac, a famous swordsman, "Hold the sword as you would a bird. Too tight and you kill it. Too loose and it flies away." For longer straight spindles, I prefer a peeling cut to a bevel rubbing cut, and the resulting surface may not be as clean as a skew master can make it, but I have no tool marks. I can be a lot rougher with a gouge than I can be with a skew. Dainty skills are needed here...
