Has anyone tried burnishing the end grain to seal it, when you get too aggressive with end grain it tends to blacken and seal the end grain and takes forever to try and sand this surface off, the Japanese burn wood to provide a natural preservative for the wood, I would imagine the burnished end grain would seal the moisture in the wood blank and slow the drying process.
