There are numerous items turned on the lathe that can benefit from the use of a recess to hold the work piece. Removing the tenon and finishing the piece is usually when you run a higher risk of having your work piece come loose from the various chuck options that attempt to hold the finished piece. The recess usually provides a solid mounting of the work piece that provides good support for sanding, polishing and small repairs if required. It is no fun having a work piece with multiple hours invested bounce off the floor.
