I have used a pressure cooker and an open top canning cooker to boil wood blanks and roughed bowls in. The boiling process basically releases a large amount of stress built up in the wood while it grows as a tree.
If you have cut boards and beams on a saw you will notice some pieces twist while you cut the board into smaller pieces, some areas of the tree have more stress then others depending on the shape and location of branches on the tree and the exposure to prevailing winds that the tree was subjected to while growing.
