Turning

Subject:
recess vs tenon

John K Jordan
I almost use a recess instead of a tenon. If there is enough wood outside the recess I suggest it can be as strong or stronger than a tenon. The recess doesn't have to be very deep. To determine how deep you can go when turning the inside measure the bowl height and the recess depth before mounting and subtract, then subtract again for the desired thickness at center of the base. Set a depth gauge.

BTW, I generally prefer bowls, boxes, and vases to be heavier on the bottom. I think the balance makes them feel better in the hand. Maybe try making some both ways and see what you think.
