John I also use the 5/8" Mark St.Leger's Spindle Roughing Gouge a lot but I use the 1 1/4" Thompson SRG more. I believe that if you bought your 5 year old son the 1 1/4 Thompson SRG and showed him how to sharpen it on a CBN wheel and if he used it a lot by the time he was 70 years old he would still have at least 80% of the tool still to use if not more. It is the Timex of turning tools as it just keeps on cutting and cutting :D
