The more I use it, the more I prefer a smaller 5/8" diameter Thompson roughing gouge. It seems to me the larger the radius, the "flatter" the edge is to the work more it becomes like a skew but without the maneuverability and other advantages. (I do rough a lot with a skew.) I supposed if I did huge spindles I might like to try a very large roughing gouge.
