Routing Question

Don Evans
I'm stuck! I'm running a 5.5" wide x 46" long piece of cherry 3/4" thick on the router table. I'm going around the outside with a roman ogee bit. I decided I should do it in 2 passes, raising the bit on the second pass to final height.
I did both ends first and clamped a backer board 1" square to the sides to stop chip out. So far so good.
The problem is, making the second pass, how do I protect the sides now from chipping out. Cannot just clamp something to the sides as it will not fit tight against the sides?
I can only think of putting tape on the sides but don't see that as a good answer.
What do you do?
I have two books, Spielman and Hilton and neither address this problem that I can find.
