Your half-inch bar with Oland cutter is my go-to tool down the center and as far out to the sides as I can get, for distances to about 5". I have it in an extra long handle, and I feel very comfortable and confident with it. For the shoulder and side, up to 5" depth, I switch to an angled 1/2" outrigger ("torque arrestor" south of the equator) made by our friend CA Savoy. I like the feel of hollowing by hand and only go more constrained for larger pieces.
This one has ears. It's time and wood consuming but fun.
