Several year ago when I started making the Chinese Balls, I made a swinging jig out of plywood as shown in the photograph. I used this for several years and then began using ones made from metal. The swinging portion was made of three layers of 3/8 inch quality plywood, with the center piece 3/8 inch below the top of the other two. A piece on top had a screw hole to lock the tool in place.

The swinging jig makes the best spheres that one can make.
