Blackwood, (Dalbergia melanoxylon) is a member of the Dalbergia genus along with all the true rosewoods. All these woods contain chemicals that inhibit varnish drying. Your best bet is to use lacquer instead, or apply a barrier coat of something like shellac prior to varnishing.
