A different approach to sharpening a skew, and the method I prefer, is to use a belt sander. This method automatically gives flat bevels and can be used for either straight-edge or radiused skews. Plus, you can use a fine-grit belt to produce a really fine edge.
It does require building a fixture for holding the belt sander upside down and keeping the switch turned On if it doesn't lock. The details of this will be dictated by the shape of the sander.
