No matter what number C was given, the answer to the question about whether 15 is the total gets them freed.

If C has 1, 2, or 3, he knows that total can't be 21
If C has 4, 5, or 6, and 15 is not the total, both of the others have low numbers or both have high numbers, so can eliminate the other extreme.
If C has 7, 8, or 9, he knows that the total can't be 9

So I guess stating that C was given 5 just makes the problem easier! ;-)
