Don't read too much into stated or inferred delays. The significant thing is that one, and only one student could initially figure out the secret word based on the letter he was given; then one and only one of the remaining two could figure out what the word was; and the third student could figure it out only after the first two had determined the word.

Your letter counts are a good start. the first student, though, if he was given any letter of "tag" would be unable to determine if the secret word was tag or another word with the letter he was given.
