One way to get that trefoil shape from a donut: cut it completely through at one point (not completely in half). Then straighten it out, tie a figure eight knot, and then glue the cut ends back together. Easy to do with a strip or paper taped together to form a torus.
This is obviously not the solution Bill is looking for, but it is interesting that it results in the same trefoil knot.
