Mark Mandell - Gone Round in New Jersey
A pith hole has worked for me on red and white Oak, poplar, and walnut. It seemed to depend on how much figure is showing in the end grain. Failed in cherry. hit or miss in hard maple.

There's no guaranty it will work in every piece or even in most so YMMV.

The idea (not mine) was to give some place for the inner rings to shrink as the slice dries. Can't cite to any published, let alone peer-reviewed, research i8f that's what you seek.
