I have vacuum baged some. I have used vinyl and urethane bags. Urethane is supple, much easier to handle and less prone to tear.

It is not necessary to run the pump for "hours". I leave stuff in for a couple of hours and then take it out to complete drying. I have used various vacuum pumps. Even a cheap diaphragm pump works fine for my needs. I now have a small "lab" kind of pump I bought used/cheap.

I don't understand the desire to have a system that cuts on and off to maintain vacuum. The pump is doing little work when it is pumping nothing. Lab pumps are designed to run 24/7.
