People were unwilling to pay what they cost to make in the US.

I had the very Craftsman you described. Sold it to cheap neighbor and bought a Delta at Home Depot. Buy from some place that accepts returns and the occasional lemon will not become a life long annoyance. Beware of the reliability of reviews. I give highest weight to the 3's and 4's and look to whether there are lots of 1's and 2's.

What is important to me:

easily adjusted depth stop and table height
flat underside of table for ease of clamping stuff
a useful light
smooth operating chuck for fast drill size adjustment (not a feature on mine unfortunately)

I very rarely adjust the speed. It set it on slow and that does everything acceptable.
