magnetized lathe tools

Re: magnet tool holding ()

I often have to degauss lathe tools which slowly become magnetized with use. These become magnetized although they never contact magnets.

Magnetized turning gouges don't interfere with turning. I suppose steel dust on a cutting edge could become embedded in the wood but the gouges turn away so much wood any contamination is quickly gone. The problem for me is when sharpening. Using a Tormek with the dry CBN wheel turning away from the edge the magnetism is enough to attach a long trail of steel dust, obscuring the edge. I degauss these tools before sharpening with a decades old bulk tape demagnetizer/eraser.
