I wrote a review of HVLP units that's in the WC Articles Section. FUJI supplied me with a Mini Mite 4 unit for the test.

To answer your question: It depends on your using the viscosity cup as supplied with the kit. The product may have to be thinned for the unit to work properly.

I have sprayed waterborne clears, General's Hi Per and Enduro poly in the shop on horizontal surfaces with little overspray issues, but you have to play with both the air and product amounts to reduce the bounce-back to a minimum. All that said, I doubt I'd be spraying a heavier bodied pigmented paint in the shop without a spray booth.
