I was treated to a tour of Lee Valley manufacturing a few years ago. The manufacturing of the metal parts was the highlight. A piece of steel could be mounted and a CNC would remove metal to make a tool, or part for a tool. Some weeks later another run of this part was to be made. If the cutters had been sharpened the differences in the current cutters vs what they had been could be programmed into the CNC to adjust for these differences. A test part was made and sent to an optical device to compare what was made to the standard. Differences were adjusted back into the CNC programming. Start production.

It is how a country with relative high labor costs can compete against a country with lower labor costs. Reduce the amount of labor and the skill of that labor.
