Your probably looking at flush hollow core wood doors which are 1 3/8" thick and only have a narrow rail filler at the top and bottom. To cut 2'' off, try cutting 1" off one end and if it is still solid wood, cut the other 1" from the other end. If not, cut the remaining 1" off the same end so you will only end up having to put a filler at one end. Anyway that's how I would approach it.
