I am also in the realm of almost-no-nothingness regarding the properties of varnishes. And we are dealing with proprietary information and trade secrets in a competitive marketplace for goop in a can, and government regulations (or lack of them) for witch's brew you're not expected to put in your mouth and swallow. My father was a plasterer, and my uncle was a farmer, so at least I know what slaked lime is, and realized immediately that you mistyped it, which would make it a bit difficult to find with Google. The farmers around here dump tons of it on their fields every spring to correct acidity in the soil.
