But this discussion has reminded me of what else I should try - thinning my violin varnish and adding cobalt salt because it smells a dream and actually makes a nice almost clear finish.

I've posted this solid spruce guitar before (my apologies, I'm not prodigious enough to post new things all the time), and expected it to look "warmer". Instead, the plain violin varnish looks like instrument lacquer (without the repairability or higher hardness :\ )
