It is a tung oil based varnish. While it is not quite as tough as polyurethane, it's advantage is if it is damaged, you can apply another coat and correct the problems.
Definitely listen to Bill's warning regarding polymerizing in the can. That can be a very disappointing surprise (DAMHIKT). Ellis has noted, however, that if it gels, it is still usable, if you can extract it from the can and can apply it with a rag.
