Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
I have not historically had success with card scrapers. A demonstration by Paul Hamler changed my success. Shown is the 3rd time I rolled a new edge on this scraper with only a cleaning step preceding straightening and re-rolling the burr, a task that took seconds. The burr is both effective and long lasting. Paul's technique can be found on his web site in a too long video on scrapers.
Shown are what will become two end panels for the side of a desk. The wood is ash crotch harvested from dead ash on our farm. The first picture is the panel as it came out of the vacuum bag. The second is after some scraping. Planing this piece is beyond my pay scale, so I fell back to reliable scraping.
