I would've said some kind of curing finish years ago, but now, I'd say that shellac by itself ought to be fine. If it needs a touch up in the future, it'll be as easy (literally) as just padding a tiny bit more on.

I built two bookcases for my kids - one five years ago and the other about 8. They're just made with shellac. The kids slobbered all over them and left water marks on them, and some rings from cups. It may have taken 5 minutes to repair all of it with a paper towel and some zinsser spray shellac (spraying onto the paper towel - easier to transport the can and not dump it by accident).
