Given the difficulty making it and the fact there is no natural source for it, I doubt it was used before 1850 and likely not before 1900. There is no mention of it in a 1925 book I have on wood finishing.

Speculating....I think it simulates the look of old mahogany(fact) and therefore may have been used to make "modern" Period pieces look like authentic ones.
