Subject:
Tree Guy question, removing limb?

Barry Irby
I have a redbud in my back yard, a Cercis Forest Pansy. It had a long limb out one side that split in a storm. I took it off. There was some interior damage from a break in the bark from a smaller failed limb. It never managed to seal and rot set in. Now the wound on the main truck is probably ten inches across. I will go out there tomorrow with a sharp chain and cut it off cleanly, ran out of daylight today. I fear some damage had made it to the trunk.

I know the current wisdom is to not seal the wound, at least I think that is the case. I planted the tree when it was a mere lad more than thirty years ago and it's an old friend. Is there anything I should do?
