That actually ties in to the foil backed roof sheathing too - I've always used it on houses with metal roofs, but since it reduces heat transfer from the roof to the house, I could easily see its use with a shingle roof causing reduced roofing life. It's going to keep the roof hotter to keep the house cooler.

Ventilating under the sheathing won't necessarily improve shingle life, but it will keep the house cooler. I had always understood the point of attic ventilation to be primarily moisture removal and to a lesser extent cooling efficiency.
