You might want to start with a fairly simple project that can be completed in a short time. Maybe a toolbox or birdhouse. Something that he can hold up and say "I made this". This will maintain his interest. From there you can introduce a new skill or technique at each additional lesson and move to more complicated and detailed projects.
My 3 year old granddaughter is an experienced woodworker and lets me help her in the shop. :D
