I don't think it was that, he sold stones of all colors and they all looked better under the fluorescent lights. The optics of color stones gets more complicated, because the more saturated they are, the better they end up looking when there is a certain amount of light coming through them from behind. The people selling diamonds were always using halogens and dark backgrounds - because glitter was the selling point, we were using fluorescent and white backgrounds to better show the color.
