Resin with a solvent is usually a spirit varnish - like shellac. Add an oil that will dry (whether through cooking or chemical treatment) and you get an oleoresinous varnish...aka, oil varnish. Lots of resins besides shellac - phenolic, urethane, amber, sandarac, copal, dammar, kauri gum, rosin (pine resin), sandarac, balsam, elemi, mastic, etc.
