Do you recommend them?

I started out my woodworking with pipe clamps too.....didn't we all? Had I known of their disadvantages relative to other choices I would have skipped over that learning experience and began with better functioning clamps.

I could cut dovetails with a hack saw, but I don't recommend a beginner starting there if they can afford something better.

As beginners we start with what we know and can, or will, afford. With greater knowledge I would have avoided most of the beginning choices I made and began with what I eventually found to be best for my work. I didn't have a club or Forum to provide information from experienced woodworkers.
