For air nailers I like the quietness of a tiny quiet compressor. Any size will run a nailer.

For air driven random orbit sander you might need as much as 17 cfm at 90 psi supplied by a two stage at least 5 HP compressor that is very noisy and best isolated.

For spraying finish on furniture about anything other than dinky will work.

My shop has the two extremes. I used to have the middle ground before I went to ROS sander.
