I built a round table years ago and had two parallel arms across the grain with a block between them that could slide in and out. A screw through the block and the top was attached.

In your case I would use a "z" clips on both sides of the cross grain arm and let it slide.

I also think the arms mounted at a 45 and screwed in would work fine. The arms would flex.
