It is not nice to do chemistry experiments on the finished product.

It may be presumptuous to assume that "spar varnish" today has any resemblance to its original properties. But if.....spar varnish was formulated to be flexible and suitable for outdoor exposure (like on spars!). This property was achieved by ratioing the hard resin component of varnish to the soft oil component to achieve a softer flexible result(plus UV stabilizers). Just what you want for a picnic table outside. Maybe not what you want for an indoor fine furniture table.

What is going to happen if the finish is composed of soft flexible layer bonded to a hard ridged layer I can't guess. But I would not want to do the experiment to see what happened.
