I do something similar to what Larry does. I put on two or three coats using regular thinned poly (I use naptha), I don't sand between the coats until I have at least two on unless the coat is really rough.
I then use the wipe on poly for the final two , usually gloss it dulls down pretty well with steel wool. I find that the wipe on goes on a lot better than thinned poly from the can , less streaking more even finish just easier to use.
Three to four coats this way gives good protection and using the poly from a can builds the finish quicker
