I suppose a D-handle base would be very useful for a fixed base router, but I can't imagine how to use it with a plunge base. Now, I've never had one with a D-handle, so I'm only guessing. It's primary function is keeping the router from tipping when profiling an edge, especially when going around an outside corner. For that, I use a simple homemade plate similar to this one:
