Triangles are the bases for structural rigidity.
Besides the obvious ones, there are many hidden triangles in most all construction.
As has been stated mortise and tenons rely on triangles for structural stability.
Curved backs offset the pivot point forming a triangle dramatically increasing the strength by redirecting the forces to make use of the materials best properties. introducing triangles, curves, compound curves, into structural design is all about redirecting the force to make the most of the materials properties.
