Moving point loads makes the engineering difficult. You slide fore and aft in a chair. If assisted into the sitting position by a gentlemen pushing on the back, you add a completely different load. Then the dreaded tilting back on the back legs! But the real purpose is just to withstand vertical load.
Our biggest concern now with chairs in our home, is scooting them on hardwood floors. My wife's knees and hips are really deteriorating. She can't take any weight off the chair while moving it. We'll be looking at casters really soon!
