X10?

Something like X10 or even those Christmas light remote sets (probably on sale right now!) could work as well. No wiring required.

I have a Panasonic wireless phone that has the intercom feature and it rings when she uses it. I'm of the "loud noises startle me" crowd, so I would just plug a red bulb into a fixture that connects to a wireless controlled socket. I have a similar setup connected to my dust collector when it is on - there is a red light on the wall that lights up.

Funny, when I first moved in this shop, I had a rule - no clocks, no phone, no computer, etc. Yeah, they are all in there now. Oh well.

Oh, Lee Vally sells a nice door bell (a real live brass bell) that you might could rig with a string up top for your wife to pull! Or, you could even use a wireless doorbell for that matter. Hmmm, that might be the easy ticket there.
