Subject:
Top on Chest of Drawers question

Barry Irby
I am about to install the tops on the chests of drawers I am building. I want to let them float along the rear to allow for the expansion and contraction of the solid cherry tops. I was planning to screw them securely tot eh front rail. The chests are heavy. I am fearful someone will lift them by the top and rip it off.

I could glue it along the front rail. What's wrong with that?

I could leave it completely loose and let it just lift off.

Give me some thoughts.

A second question. What about applying the finish before final assembly? I have not installed the drawer fronts or the top. I'm beginning to think prefinishing the parts and chests would be a good thing.
