Hi Karen, welcome to our forum. For me, it was, and still is though much less so, the woodworking magazines that taught me what I needed to know to work wood.

At the time it was Woodsmith, then Wood Magazine, that was most helpful. The New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abrams was also a big help and I believe you can watch any of them on the internet. A knowledgeable woodworking friend told me when I started that if you have a router and a table saw you can do 95% of what Norm does in each program.

First projects were making saw horses and then a workbench as you have to have both from the start.

Of course, everyone here will be happy to answer any questions you have in the meantime.
