I never thought of connecting them in series (I suspect the OP did not either). So basically, this whole thing about not "needing" the common is a rabbit hole. In the configuration that the OP tried to describe, the common is indeed needed to complete the circuit, but as the two hots are 180 degrees out of phase, it need not be oversized.
