I mentioned below that I was initially in error to say that the common needed to be larger to carry the return of both hots - assuming the two hots are 180 degrees out of phase.

What I don't understand is why you suggest the common would only carry the the unbalance current between the two 240 lines. The OP was suggesting using each hot for a different appliance, so the other hot line could not carry the return of the other. While the common would not need to be oversized, it would need to carry the full load return current of the appliance, would it not?
