The tarp is exactly the way I handle the traps, never been sprayed in a bunch of captures. But young skunks are riskier since the kids may have not yet learned the wisdom of being judicious. One sprayed a bit even after the trap was covered when it was jostled. Fortunately I was upwind.

Be careful about paying someone to release an animal in a neighboring area. A friend caught a raccoon and released it miles away. She caught another and thought it looked familiar and marked it's forehead with some red paint before releasing it in the same spot. She caught the same raccoon again a few days later.

I have no idea how far skunks are capable of traveling.
